Clash of the Titans is what you saw Saturday the 17th when the Dawgs of Gilbert took on the Soldiers of Mesa. Both teams were undefeated coming into today’s contest and neither of them were ready to take a loss at the end of the day.
Today’s game was a constant battle for field position and both teams put up a tough fight for four quarters. The Soldiers struck first when Joseph Romero [23] picked off a Gilbert pass for a 70+ yard touchdown. Unfortunately, the great run by Romero was pulled back due to a block in the back by one of the Soldiers. While in great field position the Soldiers were unable to punch it in.
Near the end of the first half Gilbert tossed another pass, this time it was picked off by Isaiah Tucker [32] who ran it back for a 60+ yard touchdown. There were no flags and the Soldiers missed their attempt at the extra point. The Soldiers went to the half with a 6 – 0 lead.
The second half was just as tough as the first half as the two teams continued to battle for position and the win. It seemed as if just when the Soldiers would gain some ground they would lose their momentum with small mistakes that resulted in penalties.
The Dawgs connected with a receiver early in the 4th Quarter to tie the score 6 – 6. The intensity on the side lines grew as the Dawgs lined up for the kick and 2 point lead. They were able to get the kick off but it went left and the game was 6 – 6.
The two teams finished the game as true champions neither giving much ground to the other. It was plain to see that the two undefeated teams meant business and did a great job today. The two came into today’s contest undefeated and they left the same when the referee held the ball in the air.
Thanks goes out to the Gilbert Dawgs for their hospitality and a great game. As always our sincere thanks and gratitude go out to our parents for all the support and dedication throughout the season. The Soldiers end their regular season with a 6 – 0 – 1 record and prepare for the playoffs.
The scheduling for the playoffs is tomorrow and I will report later on how the schedule for the playoffs looks.
