What a great season for the Mesa Soldiers their inaugural season with the CAYFL. The boys from Mesa made a great run for the CAYFL Championship but fell short in the the semi-finals when they faced off against the #1 seeded Mustangs from Chandler.
The first quarter was similar to their previous playoff round games and neither team was able to put up any points in the first quarter. The Mustangs struck first with their first score of the day within the first few minutes of the second quarter. They lined up for an apparent two point conversion attempt and rolled out with the fake for a run to the wide side of the field for the extra point conversion. The score was now 7 –0 with the Mustangs in the lead. The Soldiers drove to within scoring range within the 2nd quarter; however the defense of the Mustangs were able to keep them from getting into the end zone. The Soldiers held the Mustangs for the remaining first half and for the first time this season went to the half down by 7.
The Mustangs took the kick off in the third quarter and capitalized on a few mistakes made by the Soldiers and were able to put up their 2nd and final touchdown of the day mid third quarter. The attempted kick by the Mustangs came up short and the score was now 13 – 0 late in the third quarter. The Mustangs recovered their onside kick, but were unable to capitalize on their possession and the Soldiers started their march down field. Once again the Soldiers were inside of the red zone, but just weren’t able to get the last few yards required for the score.
The day, and the Soldier season, would end with a 13 – 0 loss to the #1 seeded Mustangs; but too look and listen to our boys you wouldn’t have known it. The Soldiers put up a great fight today and have every reason to keep their heads held high as they walk away from the semi-finals. Each and every Soldier had a fantastic season and we couldn’t be more proud to call ourselves Soldier Coaches.
We extend our thanks to Chandler Youth Football and the Mustangs for their hospitality and for a great game. We wish them well as they enter the CAYFL Championship game next week. Their next opponent is still unknown as the other semi-final game between the Gilbert Dawgs Red and the Scottsdale Firebirds Red will be played later on today.
As always we’d like to thank our parents and supporters for all you do for the boys. Thank you for keeping them motivated and well hydrated while getting them to every practice and game on time and ready to play. Our successful season certainly would not have been possible without your support and dedication.
