Special Teams

Posted by Clint Parsley On August - 30 - 2009

The Mesa Soldiers took this Friday off and practice was held on Saturday instead. The Saturday practice concentrated on Special Teams, Special Teams and Special Teams. I’m not stuttering, the entire Saturday practice concentrated on various Special Team efforts.

After warm-ups the boys moved to the bigger field and started working on kicking extra points. This year the defense is allowed to rush the extra point and the boys needed to get used to the added pressure of the rushing defense.

It was a slow start as the place holder and the kicker were getting used to the increased speed of the play. After a number of attempts the boys started to get it together and the kicks started making it through the uprights. They finished the extra point portion of practice on a positive note by kicking 8 out of 11 attempts through the uprights.

They moved on to kick off and kick off return for the remaining of practice. The morning heat was trying Read the rest of this entry »

Aztecs Scrimmage

Posted by Clint Parsley On August - 28 - 2009

The boys played their second scrimmage this evening. Thanks goes out the the Desert West Aztecs for their hospitality and for being great hosts.

The Soldiers started off a little slow this evening, allowing the Aztecs to move the ball down field with a score early on. The defense played tougher for the remainder of the first series and held the Aztecs to just minimal gains.

The offense came out strong for the first series but had a few problems with fumbles and some missed blocks. They moved the ball well and was able to score in the second half of the 10 play series.

The second series of defense came back out and was determined to keep the gains of the Aztecs to a bare minimum. Save one botched play Read the rest of this entry »

Getting Ready for Scrimmage

Posted by Clint Parsley On August - 21 - 2009

Last night’s practice went very well, concentrating mostly on offense and running through a variety of different plays. The defense got a workout as well as we went live with one another in a semi scrimmage like manner.

More walkthroughs tonight to ensure everyone knows where they are supposed to be, what to do and more importantly WHY they need to do it. The boys learned very quickly last night that all it takes is for one man to not to his job to take the play straight Read the rest of this entry »

Why Mesa Youth Football part 2

Posted by Clint Parsley On August - 18 - 2009

As I mentioned in part 1 of this series, I believe it to be important one chooses the youth organization that puts the interest of your children first. Mesa Youth Football ,as a committed member of the CAYFL, lives and breathes by the “Kids First” philosophy. You’ve heard me mention “Kids First” more than once but never with much elaboration. In this post I will elaborate on the breakdown of our divisions and how it embraces a “Kids First” mindset.

The safety of your child is paramount and our first concern. To that end we, as a league of Associations, continually evaluate our official rule book to ensure the safety and well being of your child is in the foremost part of our operations.  One such example is the way in which we determine divisions by age and weight. The divisions within Mesa Youth Football and all other CAYFL Associations are designed with the overall safety and well being of your child in mind. As seen in the official 2009 Weight Chart our divisions are broken down somewhat differently than other local youth football organizations.

As with other similar youth organizations we incorporate your child’s natural growth and weight gain into our program. While similar youth organizations allow 1 pound per week throughout the season; we simply front load the 9 pounds in the beginning. Our student athletes are not given the 1 pound per week, but instead are given the room from growth from the onset.  This ensures your child can continue with his/her regular diet without concern of having to move to another division or not certifying for a game mid-season.

Further investigation of the Weight Chart will show an extra tackle division named Cadet. The Cadet division is a relatively new division within the CAYFL and provides opportunities for the younger players to learn before participating in a division where the players have 5 or 6 seasons of football under their belt. Allowing for a young, first or 2nd year player, to play with others with the same amount of experience provides a safer environment for that young athlete to learn the great game of football and foster the excitement for continued participation in youth sports.

Providing appropriate divisions based on age, weight and now even experience is just one of the many ways we incorporate “Kids First” into our everyday business operations.

Stayed tuned for the next  installment of this series for more examples of how Mesa Youth Football and the CAYFL embrace the “Kids First” philosophy.
